Methamphetamine Addiction

Meth or methamphetamine is an amphetamine derivative, which is used to stimulate the nervous system and to suppress the appetite. Generally in crystalline hydrochloride form, this psychoactive stimulant increases the attentiveness, concentration and vigor of the user. When ingested in higher doses, it can induce euphoria, increase libido, and enhance self-esteem. Meth is highly addictive and is known to cause permanent damage to various body organs. If you have a loved one who is hooked on this drug, it would be better to seek early treatment at a meth addiction rehab center before the dependence gets worse.

While its use have been approved by the USFDA for the treatment of exogenous obesity and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder under the name Desoxyn, there are particular varieties of meth that is being made available on the street with names such as speed, meth, chalk, ice, crystal, chicken feed, shabu, trash, glass, and tina. Oftentimes, meth is introduced in the system using an injection. Other methods include smoking, snorting, swallowing, or inserting it into the rectal area. Because of its ability to increase the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, the user feels a euphoric rush and the sense of being in control.

Recent studies made available by the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, showed that meth is gradually taking over as the most abused drug worldwide. With an estimated twenty-six million meth addicts all over the world, meth now has the distinction of having twice the number of heroin and cocaine addicts combined. According to a 2008 study done by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, almost twelve million six hundred thousand Americans aged 12 years old and higher have admitted to using meth at least once.

The same study revealed that for every one hundred thousand population, at least fifty-six meth addicts were admitted for treatment at meth addiction rehab centers. In fact, states like Oregon, Hawaii, Iowa, and California are reported to have the highest rate of treatment admissions at more than two hundred meth dependents for every one hundred thousand population. Most of these meth dependents show a variety of health problems like extreme weight loss, severe dental problems, insomnia, confusion, anxiety, violent behavior and mood disturbances.

Extreme cases show a number of psychotic behaviors such as paranoia, delusions, and visual, as well as, auditory hallucinations. Since as of the moment, there are no approved medications for use in treating this type of drug dependency, most meth addiction rehab centers treat meth cases using a comprehensive cognitive to behavioral intervention. This include approaches like family education, behavioral therapy, individual counseling, the twelve step support, and fostering non-drug related activities.

Meth addiction is a spreading threat that has the potential of hooking those whom you love the most. Since meth can cause a rapid deterioration of their health, it is always a good idea to talk and encourage them to submit themselves to treatment at a meth addiction rehab center.
