Louisiana is continually combating major drug and alcohol abuse challenges. While alcohol abuse and dependence, as well as admissions for alcohol use are decreasing, this is not the scenario for drug abuse and dependence on drugs. With the rising drug use issues in Louisiana, the state is still among the 10 states with lowest rates among the age group 12-17 for past year and past month marijuana use as well as past year cocaine use.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, Louisiana has consistently been ranked at or below the national rates for all age groups for past year dependence on or abuse of alcohol. Additional information from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services and the Treatment Episode Data Set, indicate that there has been a small decrease of treatment admissions mentioning alcohol. More specifically, alcohol only admissions have dropped by 8% since 1992, accounting for 12% of admissions in 2006. Additional information from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that among individuals 26 and older in Louisiana, the rate of unmet drug treatment has consistently been among the 10 highest in the country.

Louisiana Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs Offer Solutions

In 2006 the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services reported a total of 145 treatment facilities in Louisiana, with 53 private non profit, 38 private for profit and an additional 2 facilities owned or operated by Tribal authorities. Outpatient treatment in Louisiana is offered by 104 facilities and residential care is provided by 47 facilities. In addition there are 10 facilities and 14 treatment programs with 141 physicians that are certified to provide buprenorphine therapy for the addiction of opiates.

Louisiana has many free or very affordable drug and alcohol rehab programs. In some cases insurance will not cover the total cost but will take care of the majority, leaving a reasonable amount to be paid for by the client.
