10 Unbelievable Medical Conditions

From the bizarre to the almost uncommon, these disorders are absolutely nonfictional and a few unlucky people have to put up with them every year.

The Conditions

10.) Cold Urticaria (allergic to cold temperatures)

Cold Urticaria is an allergy to cold temperatures where hives or large red welts form on the skin after exposure to a cold stimulus. The welts are usually itchy and often the hands and feet will become itchy and swollen as well. Hives vary in size from about the size of a pencil eraser to as big as a fifty pence piece or larger.

9.) Long Term Insomnia

People who suffer from this ailment, stay awake nearly 24 hours a day. You can imagine the effect that has on a persons physical and mental health. “The brain literally is squeezed into the spinal column. What happens is you get compression, squeezing, strangulating of the brain stem, which has all the vital functions that control sleep, speech, our cranial nerves, our circulatory system, even our breathing system,” said ABC News medical consultant Dr. Marie Savard.

8.) Sleep Fighting

Ron Swanson of Parks & Recreation suffers from it. Seriously though, this is a legitimate disease where people actually conduct fight like movements in their sleep. Some people have even reported waking up while fighting or even strangling their spouse.

7.) Hyperthymesic Syndrome (you can’t forget anything)

We’ve all seen National Geographic episodes where they have super-human type people who can remember every day of their life- this is the disorder. Only a few people every year end up with this but it comes with it’s own problems. Got into a fight with your girlfriend four years ago? Well, she forgot about it but people who suffer from this will never forget a single detail.

6.) Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Exactly how the name sounds, this disorder causes the affected people to naturally show negative, angry, and defiant behaviors. It’s primarily in kids and teens, but if you ask me- doesn’t every teenager have a certain level of ODD? Pretty sure someone will make a pill to “cure” it.

5.) Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy (people who feel no pain)

The condition is produced by a stunted development of nerve fibers crucial in the detection of pain and temperature A.K.A. they cannot feel any pain at all. As the name suggests, this is a hereditary disease that can only exist if both parents carry the genetic mutation. People inflicted with HSAN sadly do not last very long; They never learn to avoid things that produce pain.

4.) Lipodystrophy (people who never get fat)

Some would say this is also one of those Godsend type conditions; people who suffer from Lipodystrophy have an unusual ability to rapidly burn fat. The cause of the fat loss is due to extremely high insulin levels, sometimes 10x higher than a normal adult. I guess this would be a dieters dream!

3.) Foreign Accent Syndrome

Folks with FAS, which usually occurs from a brain injury will suddenly start speaking with a foreign accent, A Canadian woman in 2006 suffered a stroke, when she woke up she spoke with an accent from a region of Canada she had never even been to. Odd? You bet!

2.) Aquagenic Urticaria (allergic to water)

Not many people on this planet have this crazy disease, but sufferers of AU break out into painful rashes when they come in contact with water (specifically on the body). Hot, cold, warm, salt or fresh- it doesn’t matter. In fact, even your own sweat can make you break out into unbearably painful rashes. This is tough one for me to wrap my head around because our bodies consist of so much water, but that’s why it made #2 on the list.

1.) Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome

This has to take the cake. While it may seem like a great thing, the people who suffer from it live life with PSAS at the brink of orgasm — the condition is more of a curse than a blessing. Up until 2001, it was a curse that didn’t even have a name.  Imagine having to work feeling like you are about to pop? Awkward!

Bonus Illnesses:

Non-stop Hiccuping: Suffers are unable to stop hiccuping for their entire lives.

Amplified Electromagnetic Field Sensitivity: Suffers cannot use any form of modern technology that produces an electromagnetic field or they will break out into full body rashes.
